Painting Services

Painting and staining for homes, rentals, and small commercial spaces across Santa Cruz County. Interior repaints, exterior touch-ups, fence and deck staining, and fast rental turnovers. Prep is the job — washing, scraping, patching, caulking, and priming — because in a coastal, fog-heavy climate a coating that goes on over dirty or damp surfaces starts peeling within a season.

The work, scoped to your property.

A paint job begins with the surface, not the color chart. Peeling areas, damp wood, old caulk, dents, and salt film need attention before a fresh coating makes sense. Send JR photos of the whole area and the problem spots, and tell us whether you want interior touch-ups, a room refresh, exterior spot work, or fence and deck staining. The scope needs to be clear before a quote is agreed.

Santa Cruz fog and coastal moisture can shorten the useful working window outdoors. A surface that looks dry from a distance may still need more time before coating. For interiors, mention furniture, floor protection, occupied rooms, and the date the space needs to be usable again. For rentals, explain the turnover window and whether cleaning or small repairs are also on the list.

JR does not claim a California contractor's license. Painting and staining requests must fit the work legally permitted without one; projects requiring a license, permit, or specialist should go to an appropriately licensed contractor. Existing paint of uncertain age or condition may also require specialist assessment rather than casual sanding. Discuss those concerns before work starts. Washing, scraping, patching, caulking, and priming are part of deciding an appropriate preparation plan, not a reason to promise that any coating will last forever.

Who it's for

Homeowners, landlords, property managers, and small businesses refreshing a space inside or out.

Start with the list that matters to you. Tell us which items are urgent, which can wait, and the result you need before the space is ready to use. If there are other people working at the property, share their schedule so the requested visit can be planned around them. You can discuss the details in English or Spanish — hablamos español.

Get the quote conversation started

Quotes are free and no-obligation. Include the town, property type, photos, access details, and preferred timing when you contact JR. We will discuss the requested work and what belongs in the scope rather than assuming every property needs the same list. Standard hours are Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM, with a 24/7 emergency line for urgent requests.

Before the visit, make a note of anything you do not want moved or worked on, and any parts of the property that are off limits. If you are arranging work for someone else, identify who can answer questions about the scope and provide access. A clear list also helps keep optional extras separate from the work you originally requested. If the condition changes or another task comes up, bring it into the conversation rather than assuming it is included. The aim is simple: everyone understands which work is being requested before it begins.

Common questions

What painting work do you take on?

Interior painting for rooms, trim, and ceilings; exterior touch-ups and spot repainting; fence and deck staining and sealing; and full rental turnover repaints.

Why does paint peel so fast on the coast?

Almost always prep, not product. Salt film, chalked oxidation, mildew, and damp wood all prevent a coating from bonding. Washing, scraping, sanding, and priming is what makes a finish last here.

When is the best time for exterior painting in Santa Cruz County?

Late spring through early fall. The marine layer keeps surfaces damp well into the morning near the coast, and anything applied right before the November through March rains may not cure fully.

Should my deck be painted or stained?

Stained, in nearly every case. Paint forms a film on a horizontal walking surface, and once it cracks water gets underneath and lifts more. Penetrating stain wears instead of peeling and is much easier to renew.

Can you paint a rental between tenants?

Yes. Turnover repaints are routine, and we can pair them with the cleaning and any small repairs so the unit is handled in one scheduled visit rather than three.

Do you move furniture and protect floors?

Yes. Furniture is moved and covered, floors and fixtures are masked, and the space is put back together at the end. That's part of the job, not an add-on.
